The Friday Face-Off: Current/Recent Read

This week's topic is:
Current/Recent Read

I'm reading quite a few books at the moment, so I decided to feature a recent five-star read that I read--J.R.R. Tolkien/Christopher Tolkien's The Children of Hurin! I'll confess, I've still never made it fully through The Silmarillion, but I've been dying to read other Middle Earth universe books and decided I would just move on and try them out, and I don't regret it at all. If you've enjoyed the Lord of the Rings trilogy and have been hesitant to read more books in the universe--don't be, The Children of Hurin was extremely readable and entertaining, although it is rather tragic. Anyway, enough of that--let's check out some of the many covers for this book!

The Friday Face-Off: Heart

Friday Face Off New
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme at Books by Proxy. Join us every Friday as we pit cover against cover, and publisher against publisher, to find the best artwork in our literary universe. You can find a list of upcoming topics at Lynn's Books.

This week's topic is:
Romantic – “thus with a kiss I die”

I was having the hardest time with this week's 'romantic' theme because I don't read very many (if any?) romance-dominant books or books with a romantic-leaning cover (at least that I can think of!). So I decided to look for books I've read that had either 'heart,' 'kiss,' or 'love' in the title, which was also rather difficult since, out of the few that popped up, most didn't have more than one or two covers! But I finally found Heartless by Marissa Meyer, which sort of sounds like the opposite of Valentine's Day, but hey, we like dark things here so it fits perfectly in my opinion. Plus, there are plenty of hearts on these covers. And it's one of my favorite books!

I really like a lot of these! I'm very partial to the original US Hardcover, but I am also in love with this Dutch edition!. I'm also a huge fan of the Owlcrate edition (which I'd love to get my hands on one day, but I find that unlikely, haha) and the Russian one, both of which are also gorgeous.

The Friday Face-Off: A Fantasy Beast

Friday Face Off New
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme here at Books by Proxy. Join us every Friday as we pit cover against cover, and publisher against publisher, to find the best artwork in our literary universe. You can find a list of upcoming topics at Lynn's Books.

This week's topic is:
“The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow!” – A cover featuring a fantasy beast

I feel like the go-to for this topic would be a dragon, so I wanted to avoid that and do something more unique....but for some reason I only came across dragons, so here we are with dragons! I did initially think of one of the Witcher books, but I'm pretty sure I've done one for a Friday Face-Off before so I opted not to. I love dragons, however, so I'm not really too upset about this outcome. Since there are so many books out there with some badass dragons on the cover--and so many with only one or two covers--I thought I'd fall back and share some covers for different books with dragons.

  A Natural History of Dragons (The Memoirs of Lady Trent, #1)Tess of the Road (Tess of the Road, #1)The Dragon’s Legacy (The Dragon's Legacy #1)

  The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (Fairyland, #1)Tooth and ClawHis Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, #1)

The Language of SpellsOf Cinder and Bone (Of Cinder and Bone #1)The Rage of Dragons (The Burning, #1)

My choices:
I did not consider the fact that I'm supposed to choose a favorite when I decided to share multiple covers. I love the A Natural History of Dragons cover (and frankly, all the books in that series would be perfect for this topic), I adore the Tess of the Road cover, The Dragon's Legacy is incredibly cool, and the Fairyland cover is adorable also. I'm choosing the two that stand out the most to me, and those are A Natural History of Dragons and Tess of the Road!

The Friday Face-Off: A Tudor Novel

Friday Face Off New
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme here at Books by Proxy. Join us every Friday as we pit cover against cover, and publisher against publisher, to find the best artwork in our literary universe.

I felt that it was time to join in another Friday Face-Off, so here we go!

This week's topic is:
‘I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king’ – A cover that depicts a novel set in the Tudor period

This topic was both easy and difficult because there are a lot of Tudor novels out there, but I just couldn't decide which one I wanted to use. Eventually I remembered this one fun nonfiction book about life in Elizabethan England (which includes the Tudor period), so I thought it would be a great fit! So for this week, I've chosen:
The Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England by Ian Mortimer
A lot of these were really similar, as there wasn't an abundance of covers to choose from, but I thought this would be a fun choice for the topic anyway.

  The Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan EnglandThe Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan EnglandThe Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England
2013 Viking || 2012 UK || 2018 Folio Society

  The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England Brain ShotЕлизаветинская Англия: Гид путешественника во времениThe Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England
2010 Vintage (Sampler) || 2014 Russian || 2013 Vintage Paperback

My choice(s):
The Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England

I really do like the UK version as well, but this one just feels the most fun and inviting. It really includes a lot of different elements of the time period and has so many fun details in every corner that I absolutely love. The Folio Society edition is probably lovely as well!
