Top Ten Tuesday: Authors I'd Love to Meet

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book blog meme now hosted by Jana over at The Artsy Reader Girl!

This week's topic is: Authors I'd Love to Meet

There are a lot of authors that I would love to meet--in theory. I can be very socially awkward, especially around people I don't know well and/or am madly in awe of. Because of that, the idea of meeting authors is awesome, the reality is that I would be immensely nervous. The thing is, I know that authors are just people and I shouldn't get 'starstruck,' but there's a part of me that just can't get over the fact that 'that person literally wrote those books that I collect multiple copies of. That person!' Still, I'd love the opportunity, so here is a list of some authors that I would love to meet---you know, in theory.

Neil Gaiman - Neil Gaiman is one of those people that seems to be a truly genuine, kindhearted person. He has a sharp sense of humor, thoughtful things to say, and he has done so much that I feel like he could offer stories or commentary on so many different topics. He just seems like someone that makes it easy to talk to him and feel at ease, so I think he'd be a great person to meet. Plus, just to talk to someone who has written so many of my favorite things would be... incredible. (And I wouldn't say no if his wife, Amanda Palmer, was also there to meet!)

Anna Smith Spark - This woman is not only a phenomenal writer, she also seems to be a rather outgoing (at least online) person with a huge personality. I think she would be so fun to meet and have some awesome conversations about fantasy (or, I mean, anything) with. Plus, she did get her undergraduate degree in Classics (and an MA in History... and a PhD in English Literature), so I would love to talk to her about some Classics stuff!

Michel Faber - This is one of those situations where I want to meet Michel Faber so badly, but I don't know what I'd say. His books have meant so much to me for so many different reasons, but it's hard to put all of that into words sometimes. As far as I know, he is still retired from writing so a meeting is incredibly unlikely, but I know I would never forget it if I got to meet this author.

Haruki Murakami - I would die if I met Haruki Murakami. You might think I'm exaggerating, but you wouldn't know because I haven't met him and am thus still alive. I have no idea what I'd say. I'd be content to just sit and have tea with him (and I don't even like tea!) in some coffee shop somewhere. Or a cat cafe--that would be perfect. There are so many things I'd love to ask him about or hear his opinions on. The man could talk about concrete and I would be thrilled.

Catherynne Valente - Catherynne Valente is someone that I majorly admire. I love how she just owns everything she does and is always willing to stand up for her beliefs and the beliefs of others. I would probably be too speechless to actually talk to her, but I would do my best! She has some fascinating opinions and commentary on so many topics, I think it would just be an incredible experience to have a conversation with her.

Patrick Rothfuss - I haven't the slightest idea what I'd say to Rothfuss, but I do know I'd appreciate very much hearing whatever he had to say. I've seen videos of Patrick Rothfuss giving lectures or participating in discussions and whatnot and I think he some really fascinating ideas and is very thoughtful about everything he says. He seems like a really great guy and I respect that he likes to keep his personal life private and not always be bombarded by fans

Myke Cole - Okay, so I've only read one of Myke Cole's books, but I follow him on Twitter and I've come to the conclusion that it would be awesome to meet him. He seems like he has a really strong, funny personality and is probably pretty easy to talk to. He also has a huge interest in Ancient Greek life--specifically warfare, which is a huge interest of mine as well--so I would love to talk to him (or just hear him talk) about anything related to Ancient Greece or Ancient Greek warfare. He also apparently works for the NYPD and is in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and has done a lot of really neat stuff, so I wouldn't mind hearing about some of that if I met him....

Lisa See - I've really enjoyed all of the books I've read by Lisa See and she seems like such an interesting person. I would love to hear her talk about her family history that has played such a large role in her writing, plus she has a huge interest in tea so maybe she could help me find some that I actually like. I haven't talked to anyone who has met her either, but she seems delightful and based on the few Twitter interactions I've had she seems like the nicest person.

Lisa Jensen - Lisa Jensen is another author who seems very thoughtful and kindhearted. I don't think she has a huge online presence, but everything I've seen from her or about her makes me want to meet her. She is definitely one of those quieter authors that I don't know all that much about, but there are so many things I'd love to ask her--plus, her books are gorgeous!

John Boyne - I want to know how this man's mind works. I have loved and had strong reactions to every single book I've read by him and I need to know how he is such a brilliant author. His books are incredible and I've always thought he had a particular talent for dialogue, so I'd love to ask him how he manages to do that so well.

Well, those are just some of the authors I would love to meet. In all honestly, I'd be content to just sit and let them talk at me about whatever they'd like--I'd just love to hear about them and their lives! Which authors would you love to meet? Have you met and/or had any great experiences meeting an author? Let me know!

  1. Yes to Neil Gaiman and Patrick Rothfuss! I'm kind of grateful that the one time I went to hear Laurell K. Hamilton speak, the line for autographs was too long (it would have been around 2 AM by the time I got to see her) because I'd have been unable to speak. Hahaha. But listening to her talk about writing was pretty cool.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

  2. Myke Coyle sounds interesting... I don't even know what he's written!

It's nice that so many authors spend a lot of time on Twitter and you can actually talk to them online sometimes... even if you'll never meet them in person!

    1. He seems to be pretty under the radar, but I think that should change! Haha. It really is, I love it because it really helps to get to know them plus getting to talk to them.

  3. I'm planning on going to my first book event soon and I'm hoping to meet one of my favorite authors, Kate Morton. But honestly, every time I think about, I just want to cry because I just love her and her work so much and I don't even know what I would say!

  4. I agree about Neil Gaiman, I think he has a lot to offer. And Rothfuss too, although I'm less familiar with him, but from what I've heard I think a Rothfuss event would be very interesting. .
