Top Ten (or Twelve) Tuesday: Favorite Childhood Book Series

This week's topic is: Favorite Childhood Book Series

I have a lot of favorite books from my childhood, so I decided to narrow it down for this week and just pick some of my favorite series that I read as a kid! I feel like I might be leaving one or two out, but all of these brought me so much joy as a kid and really helped me love reading as much as I do and I've had a blast making this list. I'm basically looking at things I read before I became a teenager. Also, these are in no particular order!

1. The Black Stallion by Walter Farley

I have always loved horses, so these books were a huge hit for me. I remember always thinking the settings were really neat as well and I'm tempted to re-read these sometime!

2. Pendragon by D.J. MacHale

I loved this series so much and never saw (or see) anyone who has also read it! It's so imaginative and fun and I would definitely give these a re-read in the future.

3. Circle of Magic by Tamora Pierce

The queen, Tamora Pierce! I spent so much time reading these books--I loved the setting and magic system and all how each book in the series followed a specific character more closely. I have incredibly warm memories of this series. Tamora Pierce was also one of my first experiences with an author who uses shared universes among various series, so I thought that was really neat.

4. Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix

While most people seem to have started reading Garth Nix with Sabriel, my first Garth Nix books were the Keys to the Kingdom series and the Seventh Tower series (which will also be featured in this list somewhere). These books were dark and weird and unlike anything I'd read at the time, so they definitely stuck out to me.

5. Warrior Cats by Erin Hunter

It would be fair to say that I was obsessed with this series when I read it. I devoured these books and constantly wanted more. I thought about these cats constantly when I wasn't reading it and I remember going on the Warrior Cats website and finding out my warrior cat name (and my sister's, and mom's, and dad's...). I always recommend these books to any young readers I know!

6. The Phantom Stallion by Terri Farley

More horse books! I also loveed this series and thought it was just the best thing ever. A little mysterious and intriguing, but also entertaining and managed to teach me even more about horses.

7. by Tamora Pierce

More Tamora Pierce, of course! This was the first Tamora Pierce series that I read, if I recall, and it was everything I never knew I loved.

8. Seven Towers by Garth Nix

This was the first series I ever read by Garth Nix (I think?) and though I only have vague memories, I do remember it being really crazy and I loved it. It's more of a younger middle grade read then the Keys to the Kingdom series, which is probably why I read it when I was younger.

9. Heartland by Lauren Brooke

Oh my god, those covers! Despite the horrible covers, which I remember hating as much then as I do now, this series was everything to me. I loved the horses, I loved the main character, and I even loved the budding romance between her and a love interest (or two?). This is a really great series about coping and healing from traumatic events and, of course, horses.

10. A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

I, like many other young (and older) readers, loved this series. The narrative style is the type that I have loved ever since I was a kid, so this spoke to me on a lot of levels and I sped through these.

11. Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene

Naturally, I was a huge Nancy Drew fan as well! I still love playing the Nancy Drew computer games (did anyone else play those??) and just loved all of these books. She goes to so many places and does so many things, I thought she had some great adventures and I always felt like I was learning a lot.

and, of course...

12. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

The ultimate favorite!

Did you read any of these series? What were some of your favorite childhood series?

  2. Great list! I never read the Warrior Cats books, but, looking back, I'm surprised I didn't considering I loved books starring animals.

  5. I never read any of the Black stallion books but I LOVED the movie! I don't know how well it's aged- I should rewatch- but as a kid I LOVED it.

The Warrior Cats always looked so fun.

The Nancy Drews were great, and honestly- I loved reading through all those evocative titles (and loving the cover art as well- so mysterious!)

    1. Ooh I don't think I've ever watched the movie--I should check it out (even if it hasn't aged well, haha)! I love looking through all the Nancy Drew books too, they are so fun and I just love the classic covers.

    2. I hope you get a chance to watch the movie sometime. I think they did a really good job establishing the link between the boy and The Black, and Teri Garr and Mickey Rooney (if I remember right) were both great. I think it's a better than average adaptation!

  6. OMG You read Keys to the Kingdom too??? I feel like you're the only other person besides me that has read that! I never finished it though because I couldn't find the rest of the books but I'm so glad someone else knows what I'm talking about <3

    1. Ah I've rarely met other people who have also read Keys to the Kingdom too, I'm so glad you also read them! I honestly don't know if I ever finished the last book or two for that exact reason! I feel like my local bookstores stopped stocking them or something and I didn't use Amazon or anything when I was younger so I just stopped, haha. Such a fun series, though!
