Top Five Tuesday: Authors From A-Z Week 1: A-E

This week I decided to switch back over and participate in Top 5 Tuesday, hosted by BionicBookworm!

This week's topic is: Authors Whose Last Names Start with A-E

I completely forgot that March is the start of the Top 5 Tuesday's Authors A-Z. Last week was supposed to be A-E, but since I forgot I'm just going to start late this week and start at the top! I decided to go by author's last name because I felt like maybe it would help narrow it down a bit more?
Since I'm only choosing one author for each book, I've developed a process: I'm organizing my 'read' shelf on Goodreads by alphabetical order, counting how many of each letter there are (ex.: I have 36 authors whose last names start with A), picking a random number with a number generator, and using that book! It sounds like a lot of work, but it really only took me a couple minutes, which is great.

S.
S. by J.J. Abrams
The first number the generator picked was #1, which seems odd, but it is what it is! S. is one of those books that's a unique experience--the main book is called Ship of Theseus, a mysterious novel by an equally mysterious author which contains its own narrative story with its own plot and characters, but the second outer story's narrative is told through the marginalia of college students Jennifer and Eric as they attempt to unravel the meaning of the story and what happened to its author, V.M. Straka. This was such an interesting read and I definitely want to re-read it sometime. It's one of those that always has something new to consider or discover. (Review)

The Hod King (The Books of Babel, #3)
The Hod King by Josiah Bancroft
This time around it's #6 (out of 70!), which is The Hod King by Josiah Bancroft! This is the third book in Bancroft's The Books of Babel series and I am absolutely loving it. It's so unique and inventinve with such a strong narrative voice, and I can't wait until the next book comes out in 2021! (Review)

Mrs. Poe
Mrs. Poe by Lynn Cullen
This was a really interesting little book about Frances Osgood, a woman who met Edgar Allan Poe one day and the two had a strong connection. It goes on to follow their interactions, as well as Osgood's interactions with Edgar Allan Poe's wife, Mrs. Poe, which added some really compelling tension and elements to it. I enjoyed this one!

White Noise
White Noise by Don DeLillo
I haven't thought about this book in a while! I'm not even going to lie--I hated this book so much. I read it a number of years ago so maybe my opinion would change, but I have zero intentions of ever going back and reading it. I know a lot of people really like it, but I guess it just wasn't for me!

The Last Dog on Earth
The Last Dog on Earth by Daniel Ehrenhaft
This book was one of my favorite books as a kid and easily one of the most interesting books that I still think about all the time. It's so intense and heartbreaking, and I think what really grabbed me when I was a kid is that it was so different from other books I read and it just felt much darker than other things I'd read. It's one I've been meaning to re-read sometime, but there's a bit part of me that doesn't want to spoil my old memories of it.

Have you read any of these? Let me know your thoughts!

  2. I love your method of choosing a book for each letter! I think I did an author A-Z post a few months ago and now I'm curious to see what my criteria was, I've forgotten. I'm sure I must have narrowed it down somehow??

    1. Oh I think I missed that you did one, I'll have to go try to find it! They are so fun to me for some reason, haha. I was so unsure of how to possibly pick one author from each letter, so I just tried to find the fairest way possible. :P

  3. I remember when S came out and thinking it sounded really interesting and different, and then I forgot about it! Good to be reminded, I'm still really curious!

    1. It's definitely worth a read! It's super unique and I was occasionally confused, haha, but the experience alone was really fun and made it worth it! Plus, there are some interactive elements inside also that just add to the experience.
