Can't-Wait Wednesday: The Fort by Adrian Goldsworthy & The Godstone by Violette Malan

Can't-Wait is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released! This meme is based off of Jill @ Breaking the Spine's Waiting on Wednesday meme.

This week's upcoming book spotlights are:
The Fort (City of Victory #1)
The Fort by Adrian Goldsworthy
Publication: August 1st, 2021
Head of Zeus
Hardcover. 464 pages.
Pre-order: AmazonIndieBound

"From bestselling historian Adrian Goldsworthy, a profoundly authentic, action-packed adventure set on Rome's Danubian frontier.

AD 105: DACIA
The Dacian kingdom and Rome are at peace, but no one thinks that it will last. Sent to command an isolated fort beyond the Danube, centurion Flavius Ferox can sense that war is coming, but also knows that enemies may be closer to home.

Many of the Brigantes under his command are former rebels and convicts, as likely to kill him as obey an order. And then there is Hadrian, the emperor's cousin, and a man with plans of his own."
Adrian Goldsworthy is a fantastic historian and this new historical fiction sounds like it has a lot of potential! This Classicist is thrilled for this upcoming release!

and...
The Godstone
The Godstone by Violette Malan
Publication: August 3rd, 2021
DAW Books
Hardcover. 304 pages.
Pre-order: AmazonIndieBound

"Fenra Lowens has been a working Practitioner, using the magic of healing ever since she graduated from the White Court and left the City to live in the Outer Modes. When one of her patients, Arlyn Albainil, is summoned to the City to execute the final testament of a distant cousin, she agrees to help him. Arlyn suspects the White Court wants to access his cousin's Practitioner's vault. Arlyn can't ignore the summons: he knows the vault holds an artifact so dangerous he can't allow it to be freed.

Fenra quickly figures out that there is no cousin, that Arlyn himself is the missing Practitioner, the legendary Xandra Albainil, rumored to have made a Godstone with which he once almost destroyed the world. Sealing away the Godstone left Arlyn powerless and ill, and he needs Fenra to help him deal with the possibly sentient artifact before someone else finds and uses it.

Along the way they encounter Elvanyn Karamisk, an old friend whom Arlyn once betrayed. Convinced that Arlyn has not changed, and intends to use Fenra to recover the Godstone and with it all his power, Elvanyn joins them to keep Fenra safe and help her destroy the artifact."
I love when artifacts play a larger role in a fantasy, and I think this book sounds like it could be really interesting. Looking forward to checking it out!
