Can't-Wait Wednesday: Repo Virtual by Corey J. White & Race the Sands by Sarah Beth Durst

Can't-Wait is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released! This meme is based off of Jill @ Breaking the Spine's Waiting on Wednesday meme.

This week's upcoming book spotlights are:

Repo Virtual
Repo Virtual by Corey J. White
Publication: April 21st, 2020
Tor
Hardcover. 352 pages.

"The city of Neo Songdo is a Russian doll of realities -- augmented and virtual spaces anchored in the weight of the real. The smart city is designed to be read by machine vision while people see only the augmented facade of the corporate ideal. At night the stars are obscured by an intergalactic virtual war being waged by millions of players, while on the streets below people are forced to beg, steal, and hustle to survive.

Enter Julius Dax, online repoman and real-life thief. He's been hired for a special job: stealing an unknown object from a reclusive tech billionaire. But when he finds out he's stolen the first sentient AI, his payday gets a lot more complicated."
The whole concept of this world with augmented and virtual spaces--a 'smart city'--is so interesting to me, I'm really curious to see how Corey J. White has written and developed it. It sounds sort of awful to me, as someone who is not the biggest fan of some technology, haha, but I love reading about new ideas like this! Also, that cover is pretty neat.

Race the Sands
Race the Sands by Sarah Beth Durst
Publication: April 21st, 2020
Harper Voyager
Paperback. 544 pages.

"Life, death, and rebirth—in Becar, everyone knows that who you are in this life will determine what you are in your next life. The augurs can read your fate in your aura: hawk, heron, tortoise, jackal, human. Armed with that knowledge, you can change your destiny with the choices you make, both in this life and your next. But for the darkest individuals, there is no redemption: you come back as a kehok, a monster, and you will always be a kehok for the rest of time.

Unless you can win the Races.

As a professional trainer, Tamra was an elite kehok rider. Then a tragic accident on the track shattered her confidence, damaged her career, and left her nearly broke. Now Tamra needs the prize money to prevent the local temple from taking her daughter away from her, and that means she must once again find a winning kehok . . . and a rider willing to trust her.

Raia is desperate to get away from her domineering family and cruel fiancĂ©. As a kehok rider, she could earn enough to buy her freedom. But she can’t become good enough to compete without a first-rate trainer.

Impressed by the inexperienced young woman’s determination, Tamra hires Raia and pairs her with a strange new kehok with the potential to win—if he can be tamed.

But in this sport, if you forget you’re riding on the back of a monster, you die. Tamra and Raia will work harder than they ever thought possible to win the deadly Becaran Races—and in the process, discover what makes this particular kehok so special."
This book also sounds really interesting. I like the idea of the riders and auras, and I'm excited to see what this book will be all about!

What do you think about these upcoming releases? What are your anticipated upcoming releases?

  4. I was just looking at Repo Virtual today on NG and trying to decide if I wanted to read it. It reminds me a bit of the Matrix. I'm definitely going to add Race to the Sands to my list as I've enjoyed other books by the author. Great picks!

    1. I actually haven't seen the Matrix (a crime, I know), so that really intrigues me and reminds me to watch it!
