Can't-Wait Wednesday: Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian, Red Wolf by Rachel Vincent, & Ghost Forest by Pik-Shuen Fung

Can't-Wait is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released! This meme is based off of Jill @ Breaking the Spine's Waiting on Wednesday meme.

This week's upcoming book spotlights are:
Half Sick of Shadows
Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian
Publication: July 6th, 2021
Ace
Hardcover. 448 pages.
Pre-order: AmazonIndieBound

"Everyone knows the legend. Of Arthur, destined to be a king. Of the beautiful Guinevere, who will betray him with his most loyal knight, Lancelot. Of the bitter sorceress, Morgana, who will turn against them all. But Elaine alone carries the burden of knowing what is to come--for Elaine of Shalott is cursed to see the future.

On the mystical isle of Avalon, Elaine runs free and learns of the ancient prophecies surrounding her and her friends--countless possibilities, almost all of them tragic.

When their future comes to claim them, Elaine, Guinevere, Lancelot, and Morgana accompany Arthur to take his throne in stifling Camelot, where magic is outlawed, the rules of society chain them, and enemies are everywhere. Yet the most dangerous threats may come from within their own circle.

As visions are fulfilled and an inevitable fate closes in, Elaine must decide how far she will go to change fate--and what she is willing to sacrifice along the way."
I'm always looking for more Arthurian-inspired stories because they can be so hit or miss for me, so I'm excited to read this one sometime!

Red Wolf
Red Wolf by Rachel Vincent
Publication: July 20th, 2021
HarperCollins
Hardcover. 368 pages.
Pre-order: AmazonIndieBound

"For as long as sixteen-year-old Adele can remember the village of Oakvale has been surrounding by the dark woods—a forest filled with terrible monsters that light cannot penetrate. Like every person who grows up in Oakvale she has been told to steer clear of the woods unless absolutely necessary.

But unlike her neighbors in Oakvale, Adele has a very good reason for going into the woods. Adele is one of a long line of guardians, women who are able to change into wolves and who are tasked with the job of protecting their village while never letting any of the villagers know of their existence.

But when following her calling means abandoning the person she loves, the future she imagined for herself, and her values she must decide how far she is willing to go to keep her neighbors safe."
I'm always a little bit of a sucker for a Red Riding Hood retelling/inspired story, so this automatically fits that bill. I really have no idea what to expect from this story, but I'm intrigued! I also really like the cover design.

Ghost Forest
Ghost Forest by Pik-Shuen Fung
Publication: July 13th, 2021
One World
Hardcover. 272 pages.
Pre-order: AmazonIndieBound

"How do you grieve, if your family doesn't talk about feelings?

This is the question the unnamed protagonist of Ghost Forest considers after her father dies. One of the many Hong Kong "astronaut" fathers, he stays there to work, while the rest of the family immigrated to Canada before the 1997 Handover, when the British returned sovereignty over Hong Kong to China.

As she revisits memories of her father through the years, she struggles with unresolved questions and misunderstandings. Turning to her mother and grandmother for answers, she discovers her own life refracted brightly in theirs.

Buoyant, heartbreaking, and unexpectedly funny, Ghost Forest is a slim novel that envelops the reader in joy and sorrow. Fung writes with a poetic and haunting voice, layering detail and abstraction, weaving memory and oral history to paint a moving portrait of a Chinese-Canadian astronaut family. "
I'm not entirely sure what it is, but something about this synopsis just really grips me and I'm so curious to check this book out. The general family premise seems like it will provide a lot of insight, and I'm really just curious to find explore this story more. I'm also a fan of literary fiction, and this sounds perfect.

What do you think about these upcoming releases? What are your anticipated upcoming releases?
