Can't-Wait Wednesday: Ordinary Monsters by J.M. Miro, The Path of Thorns by A.G. Slatter, & A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow

Can't-Wait is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released! This meme is based off of Jill @ Breaking the Spine's Waiting on Wednesday meme.

This week's upcoming book spotlights are:

Ordinary Monsters by J.M. Miro
Publication: June 7th, 2022
Flatiron Books
Hardcover. 672 pages.

Pre-order:
Amazon | Bookshop.org

From Goodreads:
"A stunning new work of historical fantasy, J. M. Miro's Ordinary Monsters introduces readers to the dark, labyrinthe world of The Talents
England, 1882. In Victorian London, two children with mysterious powers are hunted by a figure of darkness —a man made of smoke.
Sixteen-year-old Charlie Ovid, despite a lifetime of brutality, doesn't have a scar on him. His body heals itself, whether he wants it to or not. Marlowe, a foundling from a railway freight car, shines with a strange bluish light. He can melt or mend flesh. When two grizzled detectives are recruited to escort them north to safety, they are forced to confront the nature of difference, and belonging, and the shadowy edges of the monstrous.
What follows is a journey from the gaslit streets of London, to an eerie estate outside Edinburgh, where other children with gifts—the Talents—have been gathered. Here, the world of the dead and the world of the living threaten to collide. And as secrets within the Institute unfurl, Marlowe, Charlie and the rest of the Talents will discover the truth about their abilities, and the nature of the force that is stalking them: that the worst monsters sometimes come bearing the sweetest gifts."
I have an ARC of this one that I've been really excited to dive into and am reading right now (although I was a little hesitant–it's so big!). I love historical fantasy and this setting and premise sounds so good!

The Path of Thorns by A.G. Slatter
Publication: June 14th, 2022
Titan Books
Paperback. 352 pages.

Pre-order:
Amazon | Bookshop.org

From Goodreads:
"A gorgeous dark gothic fairy tale from award-winning author Angela Slatter. Should delight readers of Naomi Novik and Erin Morgenstern.

Asher Todd comes to live with the mysterious Morwood family as a governess to their children. Asher knows little about being a governess but she is skilled in botany and herbcraft, and perhaps more than that. And she has secrets of her own, dark and terrible - and Morwood is a house that eats secrets. With a monstrous revenge in mind, Asher plans to make it choke. However, she becomes fond of her charges, of the people of the Tarn, and she begins to wonder if she will be able to execute her plan - and who will suffer most if she does. But as the ghosts of her past become harder to control, Asher realises she has no choice.

Dark magic, retribution and twisted family secrets combine to weave a bewitching and beautifully written gothic fairy tale."
I think this only a UK release right now, but after really liking Slatter's All the Murmuring Bones last year, I'm thinking I might really like this one as well. A dark gothic fairy tale is always going to get me excited for a release!

A Mirror Mended (Fractured Fables #2) by Alix E. Harrow
Publication: June 14th, 2022

Hardcover. 144 pages.

Pre-order:

From Goodreads:
"Zinnia Gray, professional fairy-tale fixer and lapsed Sleeping Beauty, is over rescuing snoring princesses. Once you’ve rescued a dozen damsels and burned fifty spindles, once you’ve gotten drunk with twenty good fairies and made out with one too many members of the royal family, you start to wish some of these girls would just get a grip and try solving their own narrative issues.

Just when Zinnia’s beginning to think she can't handle one more princess, she glances into a mirror and sees another face looking back at her: the shockingly gorgeous face of evil, asking for her help. Because there’s more than one person trapped in a story they didn’t choose. Snow White's Evil Queen has found out how her story ends, and she's desperate for a better ending. She wants Zinnia to help her before it’s too late for everyone. Will Zinnia accept the Queen's poisonous request and save them both from the hot-iron shoes that wait for them, or will she try another path?"
I received an ARC of A Mirror Mended without warning and hadn't even read the first book, so I listened to A Spindle Splintered and adored it. I am now really looking forward to reading this continuation and hope it's as fun as the first book.

What do you think about these upcoming releases? What are your anticipated upcoming releases?
