Quick Book-Inspired Costume Ideas!

I didn't originally have plans to make a post like this, but then I started thinking about all the fun book-inspired costumes I've seen over the years and decided to share some easy book-inspired costume ideas that I've seen! I don't actually remember the last time I actually dressed up (I know, I'm boring), but I always see ones that I want to do. Also, this list originally had so many costumes that I realized I should probably cut it down and stick to the basic, so, you're welcome for not having to scroll through a super huge post.

I tried to keep these as ones that only require a few main components or are just full-on costumes that you buy. Of course, there are some super clever and creative people that get crafty and spend a lot of time creating a unique book-inspired costume, but sometimes you just want something on the easier side--so here we are on the uh, lower effort side of things. Also, I've learned costumes are expensive, so I say grab your favorite book-inspired character or idea and get creative! I think there's a lot you can do with your own wardrobe and cheap accessories you can pick up at different stores. If you already know your costume for this year,  let me know because I love hearing about them!

Coraline
I would love to dress up as Coraline one of these years. For this, I think it'd be easy enough to grab a blue wig, a yellow rain jacket, and yellow rain boots, then maybe grab a striped shirt and jeans and you're good to go!

The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings Characters
You can never go wrong with some Tolkien characters, and there are some of the most adorable costumes for kids out there that I didn't even know existed. You've got Gandalf, Legolas, and look at those adorable Frodo and Thorin Oakenshield kid's costumes!
(from The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien)
Nancy Drew
Grab a stereotypical 'studious'-looking outfit, a magnifying glass, and you're off! I'm not sure why I never considered dressing up as Nancy Drew as a kid, but I think it would've been a really fun idea. It's simple, people can recognize it, and it's pretty easy!
(from the Nancy Drew series by Carolyn Keene)
Madeline
A very iconic look that is both nostalgic and fun. Maybe you'll introduce some new kids to the story! There are a lot of pre-made Madeline costumes for kids, but I think you could pull it off as an adult as well.
(from Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans)
Alice in Wonderland Characters
I saw way too many sexy Alice costumes, so I decided to nix that one and just go with some other characters. How about the Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts, or Cheshire cat? I'd totally go as the Mad Hatter, he's always  been a favorite of mine. (Would you look at how cute that little children's Cheshire costume is!? I'd call that a win.)
(from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll)

Sherlock Holmes

It's a classic, why not? You get to act really smart and nose into everyone's business for a night because you're a 'detective.' Grab the classic hat and pipe, any type of trench coat, and you're set!
(from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthut Conan Doyle)

Medusa
Okay, so she's not technically literary, but we mainly read Greek myths now, so it counts. You could go full costume or just buy a headpiece and match it up with something creative you own. Go nuts, Halloween is yours, why wouldn't you want to be a badass woman who turns people to stone? Plus, you'll never be lonely!

The Princess Bride
Okay, so I randomly saw the Westley costume and then I realized that there were more. How fun would this be? I think it'd be awesome to get a big group together and just make up the entire cast.

What bookish costumes would you try or have you worn?

  1. Oh, man, I don't know why I never did Nancy Drew, either! That would have been fun.

    1. It's super weird! It seems like there are either children's costumes or sexy costumes, not too much in between unless you make it yourself.

    1. That's the one I'd most like to do, I think. I see photos of them every year and always love them.

  4. Great post! I love the idea of getting a group of people together to dress as the Princess Bride cast. That would be so much fun.
